Product Overview

 

Low-smoke, halogen-free cables and materials are widely promoted in the cable industry, and such products require smoke density measurement. The measurement principle is based on smoke generated by cables or materials in a defined space under specified burning or radiation conditions, where attenuation of a light beam passing through the smoke is used to calculate light transmittance, specific optical density, and smoke density.

 

The TESTech wire and cable smoke density tester complies with GB/T 17651.1~2-1998 and IEC 61034-1~2:1997 for determining smoke density of cables and optical cables burning under specified conditions. It is used to measure the transmittance of smoke released when insulated metallic conductor cables or optical cables for power or signal transmission burn horizontally under specified conditions.

IEC 61034 requires a 27 m3 smoke chamber. A typical user is China National Electric Apparatus Research Institute.

Structural Features

 

  • The combustion chamber consists of a cubic enclosure with length, width, and height of 3000 mm +/- 30 mm, constructed of Class A fire-resistant rock wool sandwich panels.
  • All internal tooling is made of stainless steel for corrosion resistance and easy cleaning.
  • Vent area totals 50 cm2 +/- 10 cm2 and remains open during the test; baffle height is 1000 mm.
  • Equipped with cable test rack and suspended weights according to the standard.
  • The chamber door includes a glass observation window, and each of the two opposite side walls has a transparent sealed window with minimum size 100 mm x 100 mm for the horizontal optical measurement beam, located 2150 mm +/- 100 mm above the floor.
  • Photocell and light source are installed at the center positions of the windows in opposite walls, without physical contact.

Smoke Density Test System

 

  • Light source: tungsten halogen lamp, 2900 K color temperature; power 100 W, DC 12 V, nominal luminous flux 2000 to 3000 lm.
  • Imported silicon photocell module from the United States used to measure attenuation of light caused by smoke. The photocell load resistance does not exceed 100 ohms, and recorder input impedance is 10,000 times larger to ensure linear transmittance.
  • Optical density measurement range 0% to 100%.
  • Support system mounts the dedicated light source and imported high-resolution photocell receiver on the external wall.
  • Laboratory door and windows are provided with sealing structure.
  • Standard light source power is 100 W, standard voltage DC 12 V, and standard color temperature 2800 K to 3200 K.
  • One-touch 5-level transmittance calibration system with imported filters, without manual replacement of filters.
  • Heating system installed in the chamber to rapidly reach the specified temperature of 25 C +/- 5 C.
  • Computer-based measurement and control system with Chinese menu prompts, operation interface, and curve display.
  • The laboratory should be equipped with an air exhaust outlet and indoor exhaust capacity of approximately 7 to 15 cubic meters per minute.

 

Combustion Source

 

  • Fuel composition: ethanol 90% +/- 1%, methanol 4% +/- 1%, water 6% +/- 1%.
  • Alcohol burner tray dimensions: bottom 210 mm x 110 mm; top 240 mm x 140 mm; height 80 mm; dimensional tolerance +/- 2 mm; thickness 1 mm.
  • Alcohol burner tray positioned 100 mm +/- 10 mm above the ground.
