EN 13501-1 is one of the core European classification standards for the fire performance of construction products and building elements. Its technical framework focuses on material combustion characteristics, test methods, classification systems, and additional parameters.
EN 13501-1 classifies products into seven classes: A1, A2, B, C, D, E, and F according to their fire performance. Some product categories use suffixes, but the overall classification system remains similar. A1 represents the highest fire performance class, while F is the lowest.
For different application scenarios, the standard divides products into three categories: non-flooring materials, flooring materials, and linear pipe insulation products, each identified by different suffixes.
1. Non-Flooring Materials
Examples include walls and ceilings.
Class A1/A2:
These materials are almost non-combustible or have very low combustibility. They must be verified through EN ISO 1182, the non-combustibility test, and EN ISO 1716, the gross calorific value test.
Class B, C, and D:
These materials must be evaluated through a combination of EN 13823, the Single Burning Item test, and EN ISO 11925-2, the small flame test, to assess flame spread and heat release rate.
Class E/F:
Only EN ISO 11925-2 testing is required. Class E is the minimum fire performance threshold, while Class F indicates that the product does not meet the required classification.
2. Flooring Materials
Examples include wood flooring and PVC flooring.
Flooring classifications use the suffix "fl", such as A1fl and Bfl. Testing must be combined with EN ISO 9239-1, the radiant heat source method, to evaluate the critical heat flux, CHF.
For example:
Class A2fl: CHF ≥ 8.0 kW/m²
Class Cfl: CHF ≥ 4.5 kW/m²
3. Linear Pipe Insulation Products
Examples include air-conditioning ducts.
These classifications use the suffix "L", such as A1L and BL. The test methods are similar to those for ordinary construction products, but the influence of pipe installation methods on combustion behavior must also be considered.
