Product Overview
The Flame Propagation Calorimeter (FPA) characterizes fire behavior in corresponding scale fire tests by measuring the combustibility characteristics of materials.
The main measured parameters include time to ignition, mass loss rate, heat release rate including chemical and convective heat release rate, and smoke generation rate.
The testing scope covers various materials, components, end products, and polymer materials, but it is not suitable for explosive objects.
The test results can be used to evaluate the inherent combustibility of materials and provide a basis for flame spread models, fire development models, hazard assessment, building and product design, and material development.
Structural Features
- Standard control cabinet with computer and Labview intelligent control system for convenient operation.
- Computer controls the entire test process with automatic ignition and automatic combustion time measurement.
- Infrared heater composed of six 500 W quartz lamps.
- Four-hole ceramic tube igniter.
- Stainless steel cold water tank with water flow rate of 2.0 L/min and inlet water temperature not exceeding 20 C.
- Weighing system uses strain-gauge pressure sensing elements with accuracy up to 0.1 g and weighing range of 0 to 3 kg.
Ignition System
- 10 kV spark igniter with safety flameout device.
- Igniter is automatically positioned by a lever connected to the closing mechanism.
- Automatic ignition, automatic timing, and automatic gas shutoff on flameout.
Exhaust System
- Composed of axial fan, stainless steel exhaust duct, diffuser plate, smoke hood, exhaust pipe, orifice flowmeter, and thermometer.
- Stainless steel construction extends service life.
- Includes hood, gas sample probe, exhaust fan with adjustable flow from 0 g/s to 50 g/s and accuracy at least 0.1 g/s, and orifice flow measuring device with thermocouple and differential pressure sensor.
- Typical testing exhaust flow is 24 L/s.
Gas Sampling System
- Includes annular sampler, suction pump, particulate filter, cold trap, exhaust valve, moisture filter, and CO2 filter.
- Three-stage filtration with filtration accuracy of 0.5 um.
- Refrigerated cold trap with compressor cooling system and temperature control of 0 to 5 C.
- Suction pump flow rate 33 L/min, vacuum degree 700 mmHg, pressure 2.5 bar.
- Drying tube for filtering moisture and impurities.
- Flow controller for sampling flow control.
- Sampler has 12 holes opposite to airflow direction, with internal soot filter, located 685 mm from the smoke hood.
Measurement System
- Paramagnetic oxygen analyzer with range 0 to 25 percent, imported Servomex oxygen sensor, and linear response.
- Laser system for smoke density measurement using photodiode, 0.5 mW helium-neon laser, and primary and backup photodetectors; positioning bracket and 0.3 and 0.8 neutral density filters are optional for calibration.
- High-precision load sensor measures specimen mass change during testing, range 0 to 2000 g, resolution 0.01 g; actual specimen weight requirement is less than 500 g.
- PID temperature control system with three 1 mm thermocouples for radiant cone temperature measurement and one 1 mm sheathed thermocouple 100 mm above the orifice plate.
- Exhaust flow is calculated from the pressure difference across a sharp-edged orifice plate with inner diameter 57 mm plus or minus 1 mm, linked to the control system for automatic air velocity control.
Calibration System
- Imported Medtherm thermopile heat flux meter with water cooling system, design range 0 to 100 kW/m2, accuracy plus or minus 3 percent, repeatability plus or minus 0.5 percent.
- Burner calibration system uses methane with purity of 99.5 percent, controlled by methane mass flowmeter.
- Water cooling system is provided for cooling the imported heat flux meter during operation.
User Operation System
- Dedicated Labview control system with friendly interface and precise control.
- System can display instrument status, calibrate the instrument, store calibration results, collect test data, calculate required parameters, display results according to standards, and average multiple tests.
- Upper computer communicates with PLC through RS485 communication module for data transmission and motion control.
- PID temperature control module is linked with the power adjustment module for constant-temperature regulation through the PLC.
- Signal acquisition and processing module is linked with the airflow circuit control module for intelligent regulation of preset air velocity.
- Mechanical rotation module is linked with the PLC I/O ports to control the closing state of the rotation mechanism.
- Glass window and control software facilitate test start, process control, parameter setting, data acquisition, storage, and printing of tables and curves.
- System stores sample numbers, temperature curves, and test data in the internal database, and supports query by sample number and test date.
- Gas analyzer can accurately measure O2, CO, and CO2 concentration in gas with accuracy of 0.02 percent.
