Product Overview

 

The TESTech Steiner horizontal tunnel furnace is designed and developed according to UL 910 and NFPA 262. It is also known as the CMP plenum burning test or Steiner tunnel test, which is the highest fire safety requirement for plenum cables under UL standards.

 

During the test, multiple specimens are installed on the horizontal tunnel tray and exposed to an 87.9 kW gas Bunsen burner with 300,000 BTU/hr heat input for 20 minutes. The passing criteria require that the flame does not extend beyond 5 feet from the front end of the burner flame, that the maximum peak optical density does not exceed 0.5, and that the maximum average optical density does not exceed 0.15.

 

CMP cables are typically installed in air-return plenum spaces used for ventilation ducts or air-handling systems, and are accepted in Canada and the United States. FEP/plenum materials meeting UL 910 generally offer better flame retardancy and lower smoke concentration than low-smoke halogen-free materials complying with IEC 60332-1 and IEC 60332-3.

Structural Features

 

  • Combustion chamber is made of stainless steel and internally lined with refractory bricks for good thermal insulation. Internal dimensions are 305 mm x 451 mm with a length of 7.6 m.
  • All internal tooling fixtures are made of stainless steel for rust and corrosion resistance.
  • Double-layer quartz glass observation windows allow viewing of flame spread distance and display flame front position by indicator lamps.
  • Chamber height is designed for convenient specimen installation, adjustment, and observation of burning behavior.
  • The chamber cover is designed as an integrated structure and uses water-seal design according to the standard.

Combustion System

 

  • 10 kV spark igniter with safety flameout device. The igniter is automatically positioned by a lever connected to the shutoff mechanism.
  • Burner heat output is automatically controlled by the gas flow control system with 1% reading accuracy.
  • Bipolar gas flow valve control system avoids explosion risks caused by gas leakage due to solenoid valve failure.
  • Variable-frequency fan automatically controls airflow speed in the flue; fan power 3 kW, voltage 380 V.
