Product Overview

The TTech spread of flame tester is developed and manufactured according to ISO 5658-2, and also meets the related requirements of IMO FTP Code Resolution A.653(16) and ASTM E 1317.

It is used to determine the lateral flame spread performance of building products. The speed of flame spread can be used to evaluate the fire-retardant properties of materials.

The apparatus uses a gas-fired radiant panel to apply heat, calibrates the radiation heat by means of an imported heat flux meter, and ignites the specimen with a mixed-gas burner to evaluate burning behaviour under defined radiation heat conditions.

The specimen is placed vertically adjacent to the radiant panel and exposed to a clearly calibrated radiation flux region. The time to ignition, flame spread extent, and final extinguishment time are measured.

After ignition, the development of the flame front is recorded, together with the time taken for the flame front to reach each marked horizontal distance on the specimen surface.

The apparatus can be used to determine relevant parameters including heat for ignition, sustained burning heat, critical flux, average sustained burning heat, and total heat release.

Structural Features

  • Cabinet is made of stainless steel for attractive appearance, corrosion resistance, and easy cleaning. The main frame consists of two independent parts: a burner frame and a specimen support frame. These are bolted together and can be mechanically adjusted.
  • The radiant panel centre height is 1200 +/- 100 mm, and the angle between the radiant surface and the front surface is 15 +/- 3 degrees, with fine adjustment possible.
  • The radiant panel size is 480 mm x 280 mm and is composed of porous refractory ceramic tiles. The radiant intensity can reach about 62 kW/m2 and the surface temperature can reach about 750 degrees C.
  • The burner is a double-bore ceramic tube of (200 +/- 10) mm length, inner diameter 6 mm, with each longitudinal hole having diameter 6 mm. It is equipped with propane and air flow meters, and the pilot flame height can be adjusted to the standard requirement of (230 +/- 20) mm.
  • Observation grade markers made of stainless steel are provided in both horizontal and vertical directions at 50 mm spacing for convenient observation of flame spread.
  • Specimen mounting rails are made of stainless steel for heat and corrosion resistance, with pull-out specimen mounting arrangement.
  • An observation mirror with adjustable angle (750 mm x 120 mm) is provided. During the test, the flame spread rate can be observed through the glass mirror and specimen rake, and automatically recorded by foot switch.
  • Specimen holder size: 808 mm long and 250 mm wide, made of stainless steel plate of thickness (3 +/- 0.2) mm.
  • One specimen chimney is made of stainless steel sheet with thickness 0.5 +/- 0.05 mm and fitted with gas and chimney metal compensating thermocouples.
  • Calibration board: non-combustible board of length (795 +/- 1) mm, thickness (25 +/- 2) mm, oven-dry density (950 +/- 100) kg/m3, with eight holes of 25 mm diameter spaced 100 +/- 1 mm apart.
  • Backboard and locating strips: backboard 800 mm long, 155 mm wide, and (12.5 +/- 3) mm thick non-combustible board with oven-dry density (950 +/- 100) kg/m3; locating strip made of the same material, width (25 +/- 2) mm.

Thermal Radiation System

  • Radiant panel temperature controller prevents flame from turning toward the rear side of the panel, checks the internal temperature of the panel, and automatically cuts off the gas solenoid valve in case of flame backflow.
  • The heat flux applied by the radiant panel to the specimen decreases in a gradient along the long edge of the specimen, from 50 kW/m2 at the start to 1.5 kW/m2 at the end.
  • USA imported MEDTHERM Schmidt-Boelter thermopile heat flux meter, measuring range 80 kW/m2, water-cooled. Maximum non-linearity +/- 2%; repeatability +/- 0.5%.
  • Gas supply system is equipped with pressure reducing valve, zero-pressure valve, flashback arrestor, solenoid valve, and mixer to deliver mixed air and gas to the radiant panel.
  • A porous calibration board and sliding heat flux meter track are provided to verify whether the radiant heat flux complies with standard requirements.

Control System

  • Ignition source flame length 230 +/- 20 mm, propane flow 0.4 L/s, air flow 1.0 L/min.
  • Radiant source gas may be methane, natural gas, or propane, with flow not less than 1.0 L/s. The flow control system error does not exceed 1% within the range 0.5 L/s to 1.5 L/s.
  • Air flow not less than 9.0 L/s. The flow control system error does not exceed 1% within the range 5 L/s to 15 L/s, and the air line includes a filter.
  • Imported brand pressure regulating valve and pressure gauge provide precise gas pressure control.
  • All safety explosion-prevention components, check valves, and gas shut-off solenoid valves in the radiant panel burner control system prevent gas backflow.
  • Camera can observe and save the test process of a selected procedure.
  • 19-inch analysis rack can measure flame spread rate, critical flux, and heat release rate.
  • Data acquisition system can store images of flame spread length and burning characteristics.
  • The radiant panel burner system is fully automated with spark ignition and safety interlock, and all control systems are explosion-proof.
  • IMO test and calibration procedure is optional.
  • Standard control cabinet with computer and Labview intelligent control system for more user-friendly and intelligent testing.
